Title: Public Health Consultant – Dementia

Location: Remote/Virtual - Hybrid Options Available - Must Be a Michigan Resident
Purpose: This position serves as the Dementia Public Health Consultant for the Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Control, as well as, supporting broader efforts across the Department and state. This position is responsible for supporting relevant statewide coalitions in promoting and increasing awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias as chronic diseases, coordinating, and implementing healthy brain strategies, and providing consultation on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias management strategies.
This position specifically will coordinate the implementation of the Michigan Dementia Plan. The Public Health Consultant will support data and information sharing, coordination, and collaboration between community stakeholders, local and state agencies, departments, and organizations regarding the advancement of equitable and comprehensive prevention and disease management services and resources for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, caregivers, and the related workforce.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Keep informed of current state and national healthy brain and dementia initiatives and research findings, and when requested, provide summary documents and presentation.
- Provide staffing support in the drafting, implementation, and evaluation of the Michigan Dementia Plan. Prepare other reports as requested.
- Promote collaboration and communication and facilitate efficient and effective interaction among the state and community partners in areas including, but not limited to, the promotion of evidence-based strategies, services, messaging, training, and building a dementia public health infrastructure.
- Convene meetings with internal and external partners to identify, review and implement statewide priorities related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, with a focus on under-resourced populations and health equity.
- Provide consultation on dementia public health initiatives, healthy brain programming, and participate in structured, ongoing coordination and collaboration within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
- Provide technical assistance (including requests for information, presentations, and data requests) on public health interventions, including policy, to improve statewide delivery of dementia services and healthy brain promotion.
- Assist in the dissemination of healthy brain and dementia-related data and promote data utilization and data driven decision making among state, regional and local partners.
- Provide connections to additional public health programs to elevate and encompass healthy brain initiatives into current programming.
- Develop and coordinate communication and educational messages (including campaigns) to raise broad public awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
- Participate and help coordinate the MDHHS role on relevant statewide coalitions.
- Provide support to relevant statewide coalitions regarding policy, advocacy, and programming.
- Lead and coordinate the development of grant proposals, grant monitoring and reporting, centering on equitable, evidence based, and community driven strategies.
- Participate in technical assistance opportunities from federal and other funders, including conference calls, national grantee meetings, and any other related meetings/conferences.
- Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.

Qualifications / Requirements
Education: A master’s degree in public health, social work, psychology, or related field.
Experience: Two years of professional, post-master’s experience as a consultant in a field of public health equivalent to a Public Health Consultant.

- Ability to maintain relationships with a wide variety of partners and stakeholders, including—but not limited to—local, state, and federal agency staff; contractors; non-governmental organizations; funding agencies; and the public.
- Able to recommend solutions to public health problems.
- Familiarity with state government, including state procedures for contracting and reporting is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with email/internet browser software.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: No significant physical activities are required in this position other than desk work and the lifting of office equipment and materials of 50# or less. Involves significant computer related activity such as viewing a CRT or VDT screen at least 50% to 75% of the time. This position may be office, home or hybrid based. In-state travel for site visits, trainings and/or meetings will be required.
For purposes of employment standards, this classification is “Exempt” from overtime provisions of the fair Labor Standards Act.
